iPhone 14

The big iPhone release for 2022 was the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro. Apple announced them at an event on September 7. They look pretty similar to last year's models but with several exciting new features.

The new iPhone in 2022 offers:

  • An iPhone 14 Plus: This lineup doesn't have a “mini” version like the iPhone 13. Instead, Apple added a larger version of the regular iPhone 14. It offers a 6.7-inch screen without the cost of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.
  • Emergency SOS via satellite: If you go off-grid, this feature can help reach emergency services. GPS and cellular connections don't work everywhere. All models of the iPhone 14 can communicate with satellites in emergencies.
  • Crash Detection: Here's another handy safety feature. iPhones can now detect a car crash and automatically call 911.
  • Camera updates: The iPhone 14's main camera lens got some improvements for detail and low light. Apple also added Action mode for recording that creates smoother video. The front camera got autofocus, too.

The iPhone 14 Pro got a bit more of a redesign. It has everything the iPhone 14 has, along with these features:

  • Pill-shaped cutout: In the iPhone 13, the front camera was housed in a “notch." It came in from the top of the screen. The new iPhone 14 has a pill-shaped cutout instead. It takes up less room. It's also the centerpiece for Apple's new Dynamic Island. The Dynamic Island changes according to what you're doing. It might expand so you can control your music. Or, it could shrink down and display sports scores while you do something else.
  • Always-on display: The Pro models have a smart new screen that stays on. You don't need to tap it to bring up the screen. It's pretty intelligent, too, so you still get all-day battery life.
  • More camera updates: The Pro models got a few photography upgrades. The main camera has a much larger processor that should help improve detail. Other lens and software updates can help with low-light photos and smooth video.
  • A16 Bionic chip: These phones will be the first ones to sport Apple's latest processor. The A16 Bionic chip should be much faster than the previous models.

While the iPhone 14 is the hot new Apple product for 2022, we actually already had an iPhone announced this year. Back in March, Apple held a Peek Performance event. It unveiled the third-generation iPhone SE. The budget-friendly iPhone got an upgraded processor and support for 5G connections.

Apple usually follows a predictable phone schedule. We can expect an iPhone 15 in fall 2023. The SE models are less regular, so a new one might be several years away.

Apple Watch Series 8

The Apple Watch has been due for an upgrade — and boy, did we get one! The Apple Watch Series 8 came out at the same time as the iPhone 14, in Sept. 2022. It added several standout features like:

  • Crash Detection: Like the iPhones, this Apple Watch can also detect car crashes. It will automatically call emergency services and contacts.
  • Temperature sensing: This women's health feature can help understand ovulation and menstrual cycles.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) app: The Apple Watch can now measure your heart's electrical activity. This app gives readings like a single-lead ECG, which a doctor might use to check heart health.
  • New Workout features: This app got some tweaks, as well. It now offers insights into your intensity level, custom alerts and outdoor races.
  • Low Power Mode: Here's another upgrade like the iPhone's — the new Apple Watches in 2022 have a Low Power Mode to keep you going for longer.
  • Family Setup: Parents can use their iPhones to set up Apple Watches for people who don't have one. Some examples might be children or older adults.

The Series 8 Apple Watch is impressive. But Apple also dropped an all-new version — the Apple Watch Ultra. This watch is designed for extreme athletes. Do your hobbies take you to the desert, arctic, underwater or off-grid? If so, this is the watch for you. The Apple Watch Ultra is super rugged. It's designed to withstand impact and work in temperatures from -20 to 55 degrees Celsius. It can also be used with gloves. It has a big customizable button and a larger, grooved Digital Crown.

The watch has a built-in siren and new activity modes. It can dive as far as 40 meters underwater. With the upcoming low power settings, it can last up to 60 hours. Divers can enjoy a dive computer app and tons of safety tools. The Emergency SOS via satellite and improved GPS make it easier to get help if things go south.

New Operating Systems

Just about every Apple device is getting a new operating system in 2022. Apple announced most of these releases in June. iOS 16 for iPhones and watchOS 9 for Apple Watches came out on September 12. iOS 16 was a major design overhaul that included a ton of new features. It redesigned the Lock Screen and improved almost every major app. You can even unsend and edit messages.

The other operating system updates should come out by the end of 2022. These new Apple products coming soon will include:

  • iPad OS 16: This new 2022 update should offer similar features to iOS 16. It will have new shared photo libraries and various updates to major apps. It's also adding a Stage Manager tool to help you reorganize your screen. New display modes can help with specific tasks.
  • macOS Ventura: macOS Ventura will be released in Oct. 2022. It includes many minor changes, like those from iOS 16. Macs will also get the Stage Manager tool. They'll be able to connect and use an iPhone as a webcam. You can turn on a lightning effect called Studio Light that illuminates your face for great-looking video calls.
  • tvOS 16: We don't have as much information about the Apple TV software. We expect it to be compatible with Nintendo Switch controls. It could also offer support for high-dynamic-range 10+ and Apple Fitness+.

The next few iPads to look forward to are the 10th-generation iPad and the iPad Pros. The new Pros should offer revamps of the 11-inch and 12.9-inch models.

New iPad

There are a few different types of iPads with varying release dates. We got one new release in March 2022. We'll likely see two new ones sometime in October.

The fifth-generation iPad Air came out this spring. It got a beefy upgrade to a new, faster processor. If you've been keeping up with Apple's chip designs, you might have heard about the M1 chip. It's a super powerful, lightning-fast piece of hardware you'll find in Mac computers. Apple supercharged the iPad Air by giving it the M1 chip. The tablet also got an upgrade to 5G connectivity.

The next few iPads to look forward to are the 10th-generation iPad and the iPad Pros. The new Pros should offer revamps of the 11-inch and 12.9-inch models. The regular iPad is the most affordable option. It might get a larger screen and flat edges like the iPad mini. It will probably still have a Touch ID home button and should get 5G connectivity, too.

As for the iPad Pro lineup, they'll likely get a design refresh. Last year, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro got a wicked mini-LED display. It offers more contrast control, more vibrant colors and a brighter screen. Rumors say the 11-inch iPad Pro will also get this technology in 2022. Other features we might see include wireless charging and MagSafe compatibility. It's possible Apple will also introduce reverse wireless charging. With this tech, you could use your iPad to wirelessly charge other devices, like AirPods.

If you're waiting for one of these new devices from Apple, keep an eye out for an event in October.

New Macs

We have a lot to look forward to in the computer realm. In spring and summer this year, we got some exciting announcements already.

Apple announced the Mac Studio during their March event. It's an interesting “hybrid” between the Mac mini and the Mac Pro. It sits at a more affordable $1,999. It also introduced a new M1 Ultra chip — and it's incredibly fast. Another release from this event was the Studio Display. This monitor offers a crisp 5K LCD display. It also features a built-in camera, microphone array and speaker system.

In June, the MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook Pro also got faster processors. They got M2 chips and slightly larger displays.

There are also several other Macs on the docket, but we're not sure when they'll be announced:

  • Mac Pro: The highest-end Mac is the only one that doesn't offer a version with Apple-made chips, like the M1 and M2. This next update should make the switch. So far, that's about all we know about this release. It could come out as early as October.
  • Mac mini: Despite the release of the Mac Studio, a new Mac mini is supposedly in development. Rumors point to a higher-end version. It might have more points and, of course, a more powerful processor. It could also get a fresh, new design.
  • Larger iMac: We've also heard rumbles of a larger version of the iMac, possibly called the iMac Pro. It might have a slick display like the Pro Display XDR and should measure around 27-32 inches. You might have to wait until 2023 for this one.
  • 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros: The 13-inch version got an upgrade already, but its older brothers won't be left out for long. These MacBooks should get some upgraded chips like an M2 Pro and M2 Max. We'll likely see these in 2023, too.

New AirPods Pro

The AirPods Pro came out in 2019, so they're due for an upgrade. Apple announced the new ones at the 2022 fall event. These new earbuds improved on several features. These include Active Noise Cancellation and Adaptive Transparency. They also added:

  • Spatial Audio: The AirPods Pro customize the listening experience to the shape of your head and ear. It tracks your movements to improve sound delivery.
  • A redesigned microphone: New algorithms make your voice sound better on phone calls.
  • Touch control: You can now control your audio by swiping and pressing on the stem of the earbuds. You can play and pause music, answer and end calls and switch listening modes.

The new 2022 AirPods Pro got longer battery life and a more powerful chip, too.

Other New Releases From Apple

Apple's always innovating. Don't be surprised if you see some exciting new tech from them in the next few years. These future Apple products could include:

  • An AR/VR headset: This rumor has been around for a while. Apple could be working on an AR/VR headset with some fancy built-in tech and a new operating system. It might be controlled via touch panel, voice and hand gestures.
  • Apple Glasses: A similar option could be Apple Glasses. These are likely far away but could be a cool piece of eyewear to bring notifications directly into your field of vision.
  • A foldable iPhone: Samsung and Google have had foldable phones for a while. Some say that Apple is working on its own version. If this comes to light, it most likely won't be released until 2023 at the earliest.
  • The Apple Car: This is another one that's pretty far in the distance. Apple could partner with a manufacturer like Hyundai or BMW, or it might make its own car. We don't actually know much about this project, so it could be announced as early as this year. But it's more likely we won't hear about it until 2025-2027. We can probably expect similar features to other smart cars, like autonomous driving and high-tech sensors.
