ecoATM Collects Over 38 Million Devices, Removing Thousands of Tons of E-Waste
Electronic waste, or e-waste, is a growing problem in the world today. As technology continues to evolve at a rapid pace, people are constantly upgrading their devices, resulting in a massive amount of electronic waste. Unfortunately, many people don't know what to do with their old electronics, leading to them improper disposal methods like in the trash or left to gather dust in a corner.
This is where companies like ecoATM come in. We are a company that has made it our mission to collect old electronic devices and either put them to reuse or properly dispose of them. In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at ecoATM's impact, including our latest milestone collection of over 38 million devices collected at our kiosks.
ecoATM's Collection Efforts
Since our founding in 2008, we have been committed to collecting old electronic devices and to limit the amount of hazardous materials the enter our natural environment. Our approach is simple: provide people with a convenient and easy way to recycle their old devices.
We have over 5,000 locations across the United States, including malls, grocery stores, and convenience stores. These kiosks allow people to drop off their old devices and receive cash in exchange, turning one person's junk into instant reward.
Over the years, ecoATM's collection efforts have grown significantly. As of April 2023, we have collected over 38 million devices! This includes everything from smartphones and tablets to laptops. The amount of e-waste that we have diverted from landfills is staggering: 38 million devices collected equate to over 19 million pounds of e-waste. Let's take a look at what this removal means in terms of evironmental impact.
Estimated Environmental Impact
The impact of our collection efforts goes beyond diverting e-waste out of landfills. By properly disposing of old electronic devices, ecoATM is also reducing the environmental impact of e-waste. Here are some statistics to put ecoATM's impact into perspective.

According the the EPA Environmental Impact Tool, the impact of the estimated 19 million pounds of e-waste removed equates to:
- Electricity to power 9,452 US households for a year: This is a significant amount of energy that would have been wasted if these devices were not properly disposed of.
- Removing 3,766 passenger cars from the road per year: According to the EPA, the average passenger car emits 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.
- The weight of 108 18-wheelers (tractor-trailers): 19 million pounds of e-waste is a lot of weight. In fact, it's equivalent to the weight of 108.08 18-wheeler (tractor-trailers). This is a massive amount of waste that ecoATM has been able to keep out of landfills.
What Are the Benefits of Removing E-Waste?
While e-waste may seem like just another problem to deal with, there are actually many benefits to removing it from our lives.
The first and most obvious benefit of removing e-waste is that it helps to keep our environment clean and healthy. Many electronic devices contain toxic chemicals and other hazardous materials that can leach into the soil and water if they are not disposed of properly. By removing e-waste, we can help to reduce the amount of pollution in our environment and protect the health of our ecosystems.
Another benefit of removing e-waste is that it can help to conserve natural resources. Many electronic devices contain valuable materials such as gold, silver, and copper, which can be recycled and reused. By removing e-waste, we can help to reduce the demand for new materials and conserve the earth's natural resources.
Finally, removing e-waste can also benefit individuals by providing them with a safe and secure way to dispose of their old electronics. Many people hold onto their old devices because they don't know how to dispose of them safely, or they worry about their personal data being compromised. However, ecoATM provides a convenient and secure way for people to recycle their old electronics while providing the tools that folks need to remove their personal data.
