SMARTPHONES:
WHAT TO EXPECT IN 2020

2020 will be a big year for smartphones. Leading smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola, Apple and Microsoft will all be releasing new devices that promise to provide more value than ever before.

Consumers will see a variety of new foldable smartphones, ranging from the nostalgia-inducing Motorola Razr to the mysterious Samsung foldable square phone and the tablet-like Microsoft Surface Duo. For those who don't care for the retro feeling of closing their phone, there are plenty of other new smartphones hitting the shelves.

You can expect Apple to release two different versions of iPhones, with the affordable iPhone SE2 making the iPhone more accessible to customers who aren't yet sold on Apple. Apple will also be releasing the iPhone 12 for those who want the most powerful iPhone on the market to date. Competing with the iPhone 12, the Galaxy S20 will offer a significant upgrade over the last generation of Galaxy smartphones.

If you're thinking about upgrading your phone soon, you should know all about the top phones coming in 2020.

Motorola Razr

Originally scheduled for 2019, the Motorola Razr has been bumped to a 2020 release. Despite the delay, the phone is still one of the most anticipated phones on the market. The original Motorola Razr launched in 2004 and was a favorite at the time. The new version of the Razr folds like the original phone but offers all of the smartphone capabilities that you've come to expect. The phone combines a traditional aesthetic with all of the features of a modern smartphone.

The Motorola Razr is expected to retail at $1,500. Though the price might be off-putting to some consumers, it's still an attractive option, as it's only one out of three major foldable smartphone releases available to consumers. The folding feature puts it in direct competition with the almost $2,000 Samsung Galaxy Fold, and the Chinese-exclusive Huawei Mate X.

Other than the folding feature, this phone comes with a plastic OLED screen that's 6.2-inches tall and has a resolution of 2,142x876. The designers for the phone decided to bottom-load most of the apps, making it easy for a user's thumb to reach them. When the phone is closed, you can see a 2.7-inch long external display that shows users basic information like notifications, battery life, signal, alerts and the time.

2020 will show if the Razr can become a leading phone again. If the original's success is any indication, the updated version may make a huge impact.

Samsung Square Foldable

Foldable smartphones are all the rage this year, and Samsung is looking to capitalize on it. Bloomberg reports that Samsung is creating a new phone with a 6.7-inch interior display that can fold into a square when not in use. This unnamed phone is potentially going to be less costly than their other foldable smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Fold, which currently retails at $1,980.

This new foldable phone from Samsung may be thinner than the Galaxy Fold, while also trying to improve on the durability of the display. Instead of using the Galaxy Fold's plastic display for its interior, this new phone may feature bendable glass.

As for the design, consumers can probably expect two cameras on its exterior, with a single camera on the interior. Though little is known about the device, Samsung is rumored to be working with designer Thom Brown. This partnership should mean that the device's appearance will appeal to the aesthetic sensibilities of smartphone enthusiasts.

The phone's name and release date are still under wraps, but you should expect to see it sometime this year.

Microsoft Surface Duo

Another one of the most innovative new phones on the market, the Microsoft Surface Duo, resembles a mini-tablet that can fit in your pocket. The phone's specs include two 5.6-inch displays that form an 8.3-inch widescreen. The phone can be even folded fully over so that you are only using one of the display screens. The ability to close the phone will also be especially attractive to those who like the feeling of clicking a phone shut after finishing a call.

Even though it's a Microsoft product, the Surface Duo reportedly runs on Android software. Since Android powers the device, you can use all the apps you've come to expect from an Android phone. Along with Android software, you can expect the device to work with Microsoft products. For example, the Surface Duo supports the Surface Pen.

Due to the wide display and variety of apps offered, the Surface Duo looks to be a phone designed for those who need to get things done while on the go. If you pair it with a portable keyboard, the device's screen will be large enough to get work done comfortably. Additionally, the wealth of apps available should also mean that you can accomplish most of what you could with a regular tablet.

As of now, the phone has not confirmed whether it will have 4G or 5G. What has been confirmed, however, is that it runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 chipset, which is 5G compatible if the phone comes packaged with the right modem. Since the phone might not be released for some time, Microsoft may end up using Qualcomm's next chip that will have 5G compatibility from the beginning.

Currently, the Surface Duo is still in a prototype stage, with the release date not projected until the holidays late in 2020. Though it's releasing later in the year, the hype couldn't be bigger. The new year will show us if a combination of a phone and a tablet can make it in the marketplace.

Galaxy S20 (Galaxy S11)

The latest Samsung phone is set to launch in February, but the name hasn't been officially released. It will likely be either the Galaxy S20 or the Galaxy S11. Either way, the price is expected to be the same as the S10 at launch — $899 for the smallest storage size to $1,149 at the largest size. Depending on the extra tech featured on the phone, the price might increase at launch, so interested consumers will need to wait a little while longer before the price is definite.

What we do now, however, is that the phone's camera is going to be improved significantly. Forbes reports that the new Galaxy will feature a 108MP sensor that helps to improve low-light shooting due to its effects on pixels. Even bigger than news about the sensor, the newest Galaxy will incorporate a large new camera that delivers higher quality pictures than ever before.

In addition to improvements to the camera, the Samsung S11 has a huge upgrade to the battery size. The standard Galaxy S20 features a 4,500 mAh battery, and the S20+ features a 5,000 mAH battery, while the previous S10 only featured a 3,400 mAH battery and a 4,100 MaH battery respectively.

These new batteries mean that you'll likely be using your Galaxy longer throughout the day without having to charge it. Finally, the phones will probably feature 5G models that provide faster upload and download speeds.

iPhone 12

Apple is banking on the iPhone 12 to make a splash, as they give their loyal customer base a new phone to be excited about using. The new iPhone is rumored to have a fresh design. Some report that, for example, the new iPhone will have squarer edges, contrasting the rounded edges that iPhones have used since the release of the iPhone 6.

If you care about the resolution of your screen, you'll be glad to know the iPhone 12 is likely to use an OLED display.

If you care about the resolution of your screen, you'll be glad to know the iPhone 12 is likely to use an OLED display. This OLED display is a major improvement over the iPhone 11's LCD displays. The screen may also come with a variable refresh rate that may go up to 120Hz. If the rumors out to be true, it could be difficult to take your eyes off these displays.

Along with the upgraded display, there are reports that at least some of the iPhone 12 models will have 3D depth cameras. There's also a high probability that the iPhone continues to add improvements to the Night Mode feature for pictures that Apple first introduced in the iPhone 11. Like other phones on the list, reports largely point to all of the iPhone 12 models having 5G connectivity.

With all of these changes, many Apple fans are clamoring for a release date. As of now, an official date hasn't been announced. However, Apple has historically announced their newest iPhone models during the second week of September, so it's a safe bet to assume they'll probably release the iPhone 12 this fall. As for price, there will likely be a variety of price points due to the four different iPhone models that Apple plans to release.

iPhone SE2

The Apple iPhone SE2 is designed to bring those who are not already on the Apple train to their products. The phone aims to be affordable and will likely cost significantly less than the iPhone 12. One recent leak suggested that the phone will cost only $399. In effect, the phone will be a newer, more up-to-date version of the iPhone 8. Due to the price, it should be a much more accessible phone.

Despite the phone's affordability, it still comes with impressive features for most users. Some rumors indicate that the phone will feature an A13 processor, which is the same processor that the iPhone 11 uses. It may also have 3GB of RAM at its disposal. The combination of the processor and RAM, if true, should produce a phone with all-around good performance. The phone may even have Face ID on it, but that feature is still very much up in the air.

As for the design, leaked renders of the iPhone SE2 show that the phone has a very similar design to the iPhone 8. This old school design features a single rear camera and a 4.7-inch LCD display. However, the phone may also offer an alternative size of 5.5 inches or 6.1 inches.

The phone's release date is not yet set in stone, with many thinking that it will likely be offered in early to mid-2020.

Essential Project GEM

The Essential Project GEM is a radically different phone, potentially hitting the market in 2020. While little is known about the specs of the phone, early pictures of it have gotten the tech world talking. The phone looks to be about the shape and size of a television remote. This elongated screen and skinny width are especially eye-catching. The phones are outfitted with stunning color shift material that changes colors based on what angle someone is viewing them from to make them even more eye-catching.

The screen displays a user interface that's extremely tall and incorporates large buttons that would be well suited for a device like a smartwatch. Pictures of the phone appear to show a volume rocker and power switch on the phone's right side. When viewing the back of the phone, it looks to have a fingerprint divot under a single camera located at the top of the phone's rear.

There are also rumors that users will mostly control the phone through voice commands. Rumors point to the phone running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730, which offers midrange performance. Additionally, you can likely expect the phone to run on Android software. There's not much else to go on for now, but the unique look of the phone means that people will be paying attention to this phone's development throughout 2020.
