Along with the rest of the country, the ecoATM team watched the tragic events unfold in Boston on April 15, 2013 and could only think of one thing: How can we help? This rang especially true for our CEO, Tom Tullie, who calls Boston his hometown and attended the University of Massachusetts and Clark University.

That’s why we’re happy to announce that you can now donate your proceeds from recycling your old phones, mp3 players or tablets at ecoATM directly to The One Fund Boston. Not only that, but ecoATM will match every donation made at one of our kiosks.

Just follow the prompts on the screen after ecoATM has priced and processed your device, and you’ll be ready to make your donation. You can donate anywhere from $1 to the total amount – every little bit counts.

Of Boxcars and Volkswagens

ecoATM was founded in 2008 when Mark Bowles read a report from Nokia that said that only 3% of cell phones were ever recycled. How big of a problem is that? Well, each cell phone manufactured creates 3 tons of mining waste. That's a pile of toxins the size of a Volkswagen.

There are about 150 million cell phones shipped each year in the US alone. A boxcar will hold about 75,000 phones. That's 2,000 boxcars of phones shipped annually in the US. 2,000 box cars would make a train 20 MILES LONG. That’s just phones.

So Mark started ecoATM to provide an easy way for people to recycle their old phones and provide the right motivation to do it.
